The Lower World is out now!

The fourth Millipede full-length album, The Lower World, is out now! It is available now as a download in whatever file format you prefer through bandcamp with a tape version to follow at the end of July also available for pre-order. With the pre-order of the tape you get the download of the album right now. This is the second album in a planned trilogy focusing on the dark fantasy world explored on 2011's Realms. It was constructed at home in my studio from January 2011 to December 2012. Worth noting is that it is the first Millipede album to veer away from the all mono recordings used on the previous three albums and preceeding splits, tapes, etc. It was constructed using only hand cut tape loops of layered guitar recordings. There are no keyboards, no pianos, nothing else. Any sound you hear on this album was made with a guitar. It is also the first album where there are compositions featuring different guitars than my usual 90s model Fender Jazzmaster. It's cover art is a sort of obvious nod to the art featured on some of the early Slowdive 12"singles, that band having been a constant source of inspiration to this project since day one. Both "Bastard Sword" and "Sorceress" are final (and more brief) versions of songs that were worked on live in much longer forms with the help of cohorts/collaborators Jerry Reed, Cain Blanchard, and Ben Roeske and couldn't have been completed without their input. Finally, it may be of interest that "Sorceress" is my farewell to the late Trish Keenan of the band Broadcast. I didn't know her in this life but her music, presence in this world, and eventual death has affected my own family greatly over the last decade.

Hope you enjoy the record. Now I'm going to get back to work on the third record for this trilogy. Hopefully it won't take another two years.

Get The Lower World here .

Progress

I'm about 75% finished recording the next Millipede album. It still does not have a title but right now there are eight finished songs clocking in at about 32 minutes and another three that won't be used for the album but will see release in some format (tape, split, download only). Earlier this year I was asked to do another split tape for Chattanooga label Failed Recordings and it was going to be with me on one side and German Shepherd on the flip. Sadly, it looks like GS might be calling it a day (too soon to tell but let's all cross our fingers and hope this is not the case) so the split has been canceled for the time being.

Next post should be a tracklist for the album. See you then.

2012

This year should see the release of the 4th Millipede full-length if all goes according to plan. What I can tell you so far is that it's coming out on Install and will be a vinyl only release most likely with a digital download. Should be fairly different sounding from Realms while still recognizable as Millipede material. So far about 1/3 of the album is finished with work scheduled to resume this week after a lengthy break from recording. It has no title as yet, not even a working one.

In other news the second installment of the Brian Grainger & Millipede Play Ancient Hylian Folk Songs was released in December. It was intended to mark the 25th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda videogame series which has provided inspiration in the past for the first handful of releases under the Millipede moniker (Hyrule, Death Mountain, Hylian Folk Songs Vol. 1). It was available through Milieu Music as a limited edition cassette. Most of these are gone but some may still be available through Brian Grainger's bandcamp page here.

And finally, there are still copies of the split tape with Neon Viking Funeral available through Failed Recordings for very cheap ($3!!!). I have also contributed a song called "Rotten Crown" to a noise comp they're releasing with a bunch of other Tennessee noise artists which will be coming out pretty soon.

Update - November 2010

Realms is still in the works. Coming out on Dead Pilot in the near future. In the meantime I'll be posting a free album on bandcamp of material from the sessions for Death Mountain, Full Bloom, and Realms soon so be on the lookout for that. I also have a Facebook page and there is now a link in the sidebar if you want to check that out.

Also, the Myspace site is pretty much dead. It's still there for those that would like to check it out but I won't be updating it from here on out.

Millipede Bandcamp

There is now a Millipede Bandcamp page. I'm going to start using this exclusively instead of Myspace I think. It has its own problems but at least the design aesthetic is far better and there are no ads on the page. I've put up the out of print Hyrule cassette with all new artwork for free download. Even more great stuff is coming. Full Bloom is still available from Install and Realms is coming through Dead Pilot. Already working on the next album but progress is slow and will probably halt soon after the birth of my daughter...at least for a little while. That's all for now.

6. Temporal Void

Stop To Smell The Flowers

So far, it seems everyone is digging Full Bloom.

Foxy Digitalis gave it an 8 out of 10!

Forest Gospel's mind was equally blown.

The Knoxville News Sentinel even gave me some love. Apparently they only miss you when you're gone....as in moving to a city roughly two hours away.

Magma

Check out a song from the upcoming Millipede album on Dead Pilot Records. It's called "Magma" and it will be on the album called 1982. It's the last song in a mix that Dan from Dead Pilot did for Fluid Radio with a bunch of other awesome Dead Pilot groups/artists. Scope it out here.

In other news, Full Bloom will be out in a minute. It's going to be a good year for new Millipede jamz! German Shepherd split is in the works as well as other "secret" projects.

Toward the Future.....

Things in the works for 2010.
Millipede - Full Bloom (Install) full length. Finished and due out before or around spring.
Millipede - TBA (Dead Pilot) full length. In the writing/recording process. More info at a later date.
Millipede/German Sheperd split 7". In the works but no more info available at this time.

Most importantly, after the Dead Pilot full length is finished recording I will most likely provide an entire album's worth of b-side type material from the Full Bloom/Dead Pilot album sessions for free as a download here. I sent some of this material to friends after finishing Full Bloom and the reaction was extremely positive. Since I began working on the album for Dead Pilot there has been a lot more of this type of material surface. Mostly it will be things that did not work thematically for either of the albums or possibly sounded a little too similar to me to something I had done before. If there's one thing I can't stand it's an artist's inability to self-edit. At the same time I'm aware that sometimes people want to hear all the scraps if they really like an artist's work. I just want to make sure that it is understood that this stuff is not meant to be regarded as an album unto itself.

Until then....best wishes.

Here is a re-up of the Hyrule cassette. It came to my attention that the old link is dead.

Full Bloom is coming in 2010 on Install. More live actions forthcoming. Another full-length for UK label Dead Pilot is in the pipeline, about halfway through the writing/recording process. In the meantime you can still pick up copies of Death Mountain from Install (www.installsound.net) and the last copies of the Traveling split CD are available through Sunrise Acoustics (www.sunriseacoustics.com) or if you live in Knoxville, TN you can purchase one at The Disc Exchange. Best wishes everyone!

Grab Bag!

Lots of news. First up, Death Mountain was review on Tiny Mix Tapes today. You can check it out here: www.tinymixtapes.com/millipede

A nice score of 4 out of 5 is tough to argue with folks! I believe there are still some left over at INSTALL so go and get them here: www.installsound.net

Second, the Traveling 4 way split with Brian Grainger, German Shepherd, and MOTH is out now and you can get them from Mr. Freeburg here: www.sunriseacoustics.com

I am also working on a track with Brian Grainger for one of his upcoming releases. I'll be splattering a noise solo all over some downtuned sludge that he sent my way. If you like Electric Wizard and Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine (which you should by the way) I think you will dig it. More info on that to come.

Finally, I'm reposting the link to download the Hyrule tape for all those looking to check it out. Click the word below:
hyrule

Next album is nearly done and I've begun recording and writing for the one after that. I can't say anything else beyond that about either of them except that they are even better than everything else so far (or at least from their creator's perspective so you can take that for what it's worth).

Best wishes everyone!

New Millipede Album News

Quietly, I have been hashing out the details of the next Millipede full-length. No title yet, but here is a full list of songs that have been recorded that may or may not be included on it:

Ice Cream Melting
Confetti & Cupcakes
Nitrous Dream
Full Bloom
Cotton Candy Hair
A Rainbow Beam From Your Mouth
Flowers Wilting
Skullsplitter
Into the Rabbit Hole

There is also one finished song that has no title as of yet.

Tracking has been a very tumultuous affair....one day things go unexplicably well, then another I write and record for five or six hours and scrap every note. So far the finished pieces are (I believe) the best things I've done. The trees around my new house are beautiful this time of year with their white and pink blossoms and have been an obsessive bit of inspiration to me. I may post pictures as I've taken tons of them. I've been going through old photos and playing Mario Kart Wii and Resident Evil 5. That is all for now.

Death Mountain and split with Brian Grainger both available now!

Death Mountain CD (2008 INSTALL)
Photobucket

Millipede, fresh from his split cassette with Brian Grainger at Milieu Music, appears here for his very first full-length album, "Death Mountain". A huge, towering monolith of a record, this sounds exactly like you'd expect with a name like that. Gigantic masses of distorted guitars lock together to form chunks of shoegazing space-dust and singsong feedback. This is music for a weary traveler on a long and lonesome quest, and quite possibly the heaviest album we've released in this series! For fans of tape hiss, distortion pedals and dreamy riffing coated in fuzz-bliss, check this one out!

Brian Grainger & Millipede Play Ancient Hylian Folk Songs C-40 (2008 Milieu Music)
Photobucket

The first tape here at Milieu Music, and a very unique one at that (although I understand that not everyone buys tapes anymore, so every
order for this release comes with high-quality MP3 files!). Splitting sides with recent Install-inductee Millipede, this
is a 40-minute quest through the Hyrulean kingdom, chock-full of dangerous mythical beasts, alluring forests with giant talking trees,
beautiful maidens and boss fights, where our hero in green will have traveled through time to save the world so that we may spin
these tales of battle and woe. What remains of that kingdom? None remain who know...
